Treatment

Fortunately, new and more effective treatments for allergy sufferers are now available. Daily medications can help control symptoms without drowsiness and drying side effects associated with most over-the-counter preparations. However, sometimes even the newest medications are not completely effective, thus further treatments are necessary. Immunotherapy, or allergen specific desensitization, has been the standard approach to this problem by modifying the body’s immune response to allergens by increasing tolerance when exposed to them. Recently, immunotherapy has been found to reduce the likelihood to develop asthma in children who are treated in this matter. Armed with the knowledge regarding the nature of your allergies symptoms may be relieved, by employing simple avoidance and elimination measures. Currently, an estimated three million individuals receive allergen specific desensitization in the U.S.

  • Patented* Nocturnal Vestibular oral therapy
  • Allergy injections: This treatment works to decrease your sensitivity to certain allergens (the culprits of allergic reactions). The doctor prescribes a vaccine custom-made according to your specific allergies. The vaccines are administered through a series of injections in the office twice a week until a desirable maintenance level is reached. Thereafter, the interval between injections is gradually increased to once a month until therapy is completed.
  • SLIT treatment "drops" or sublingual immunotherapy": This is the most recent medical approach for allergy treatment; in fact, the World Health Organization has endorsed sublingual immunotherapy as a viable alternative to injection therapy. Although SLIT therapy has been in use for the past 60 years, the last decade has shown an increased use of sublingual immunotherapy, especially in countries in the European community, such as France, Spain and Italy. In Spain and Italy sublingual treatment (SLIT) accounts for approximately 75% of all immunotherapy treatments, and its success rate has deemed it a legitimate and efficient form of therapy. SLIT drops are placed under the tongue and affect the immune system through very specialized cells found under the tongue. Research shows these sublingual cells are a friendlier and effective route for long-term desensitization, making it an ideal option for patients who are not candidates for shots, and decreasing the chance of an anaphylactic reaction. Most patients take allergy drops each day for three to five years. Many patients unable to tailor their daily schedules to receive shots at the doctor’s office are candidates for SLIT therapy, because it is comfortably administered at home as a safe, effective and reasonable option. Dr. Garcia-Ibáñez is the only board-certified allergy provider in the Bay Area that has expertise in this innovative approach to allergy treatment and is happy to evaluate whether or not SLIT treatment is for you.
